Division on Addictions

E-mail Print

Join Division

This division was created in response to the dramatic rise in substance abuse problems in recent years and the corresponding need for psychologists to help combat this enormous problem. The Division on Addictions is dedicated to promoting the greater involvement and proficiency of psychologists in treatment, research, and social policy of alcoholism, drug abuse, and other addictions. It also addresses the problem of psychologists who are impaired by addiction.

The Division on Addictions seeks to serve the needs and well-being of its members in four ways:

  1. The Division sees itself as a professional home for psychologists who are working with addicted individuals and those who suffer from co-occurring disorders;
  2. The Division seeks to advance the use of psychological approaches and treatments in the treatment of addictive disorders;
  3. The Division works to further develop and disseminate knowledge of these practices through its conferences, newsletters, and other activities;
  4. The Division strives to represent Psychology in the broader field of addiction treatment through dialogue and participation with other organizations and non-psychologist clinicians, researchers, and policymakers.  Membership is open to psychologists interested in addictions whether or not they are actively working in the field.

The division holds regular meetings throughout the year, and is very active in creating professional training opportunities through workshops, seminars, and conferences. Membership is open to psychologists interested in addictions whether or not they are actively working in the field.
